Introducing Ziraat Bank

Ziraat Bank is the largest and oldest bank in Turkey. The government-owned entity dates back to 1863 and has now spread to become an international success.

Today, it operates in 18 countries, employing more than 24,000 staff across almost 1,700 branches. It serves 30 million banking customers, six million of whom are digital banking customers.

Challenges

With more than 150 years of history, Ziraat Bank was well established as the leading operator in the Turkish banking sector.

However, like all banks it faced a period of significant change and adaptation during the arrival and subsequent mass adoption of digital banking.

To maintain the trust and consumer confidence it had built, Ziraat Bank knew it had to implement world-class security on all aspects of its digital banking service.

Solution

Since 2007, KOBIL has worked closely with Ziraat Bank to deliver a trusted, authentic and seamless omnichannel digital experience.

As well as consulting on new technologies and potential attack methodologies, we have overseen processes including app development, UX interactions and penetration testing support.

In 2012, KOBIL supported Ziraat Bank’s launch of an internet banking service across both its retail and corporate customers. Its users have been protected with KOBIL’s Trusted Login, secure OTPs and trusted digital signatures.

The following year, Ziraat Bank launched its first mobile banking app. Our expertise in app security successfully managed attack detection and prevention, risk profiling, device binding and fake app prevention. That same knowledge was also used for the launch of the Ziraat Digital Wallet in 2018.

KOBIL’s combination of app shielding, stronger customer authentications and protected transaction authorizations were key attractions for Ziraat Bank. These are delivered through our Smart Security Management Server, PKI-based authentication, end-to-end encryption and virtual smart card technology.

Our hardware solutions, such as the one-time password generator SecOVID and the transaction authorization device SecOPTIC, were also widely adopted by Ziraat Bank.

Results

Thanks to KOBIL’s world-class security solutions, Ziraat Bank has cemented its position at the forefront of Turkish banking.

Its internet banking service is safely used by six million customers. Five million customers have downloaded and regularly use the Ziraat Bank mobile app, which generates approximately 12,500 logins per minute and has not seen a single fraudulent use since its release in 2013.

The Ziraat Digital Wallet actively serves 100,000 customers, while 70,000 SecOVID and 3,000 SecOPTIC devices have also been distributed.
